ARCHÄOLOGIE SÜDWESTASIENS (VORDERER ORIENT) / ARCHAEOLOGY OF SOUTHWEST ASIA

Southwestern Asia has formed a major part of archaeological research and discourse since at least 200 years. From the great cities of Mesopotamia (such as Babylon and Ur) to the Greek and Roman presence in the Levant, from the mountains of Anatolia to the vast deserts of southern Arabia, this diverse region forms the backbone of archaeological research into humanity’s origins. But what is the state of current research into this much-investigated region? What areas remain under-investigated, and what do projects who venture into these places, time periods, or theoretical approaches uncover? And how is this rewriting what we think we know about the “cradle of civilization”? Here, state-of-the-art work being carried out in Southwestern Asia by VARM institutes is presented, upcoming events are listed, and opportunities for funding and dissemination are detailed.
